For School Students

Everything You Need to Know and Our Offers at a Glance

The Felix Klein Center for Mathematics offers a wide range of activities for mathematics enthusiasts and regularly organizes events for school students in collaboration with its partners.

For example, during modeling weeks and math talent schools, participants work on current mathematical problems and find solutions together. They also gain direct insight into the work of mathematicians. In addition to these events, the Department of Mathematics at the University of Kaiserslautern-Landau (RPTU) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM offer internships for students from the 10th grade onwards. Those interested in studying mathematics can also attend their first lectures and earn credits as part of the »Early Start to Mathematics Studies (FiMS)« program – all from home.

Support During School Years and Math Competitions

Are you fascinated by mathematics and enjoy taking on new challenges? With us, you will work alongside experts and gain first-hand insights into research. Put your mathematical knowledge and skills to the test and challenge yourself!

»Math-Talent-School«

Want to spend a week working on real mathematical problems? You can at our Math Talent School! Together with MINT-EC and KOMMS, we regularly offer workshops for students who are enthusiastic about science and introduce them to Kaiserslautern as a place to study. A great program rounds off the week.

»Mathe-Camp«

Let's go to the Olympics! Once a year, students in grades seven through twelve study a wide variety of topics: from number theory and circle geometry to the principle of invariance and combinatorics, they gain a broad insight into various areas of mathematics. The best students then travel to Berlin to take part in the big Math Olympics.

»Felix Klein Modeling Weeks«

KOMMS organizes a Felix Klein Modeling Week twice a year. This is a six-day project week for secondary school students interested in mathematics and technology, as well as for (prospective) mathematics teachers and trainee teachers.

Mathematical Modeling Days

Upon request, KOMMs also offers one- to three-day modeling days for all types of schools. During these days, students work in groups on real-world problems, supported by teachers and KOMMs tutors.

The focus is on solving problems independently, applying mathematics, teamwork, and presentation techniques.

»State Mathematics Competition«

The state mathematics competition promotes mathematically gifted students from all types of secondary schools in Rhineland-Palatinate. In three rounds, they are encouraged to work independently on mathematical problems – with the best performers advancing to the next round.

Before University

Is studying mathematics really the right choice for you? Together with KOMMS, RPTU offers a wide range of opportunities to get a taste of what it's like!

FiMS – Early Entry Into Mathematics Studies

The FiMS distance learning program provides an insight into studying mathematics while still at school. The aim is to try out mathematics, achieve initial results, and further develop an interest in the subject.

Open House Day at RPTU

Still undecided about which degree program is right for you? The »Mathematics« Department at RPTU offers individually tailored taster days for school classes or groups of students on request! From lectures and discussions with students to all kinds of information about studying mathematics, there is something for everyone here!

Internships

Gaining practical experience in the world of mathematics while still at school

Work Experience Placements for High School Students

During an internship, students learn about studying mathematics and the everyday work of mathematicians at the Department of »Mathematics« at RPTU.

Staff from the working groups supervise the young math talents and explain what knowledge is needed for studying and working in the field.

Requirements

  • Types of schools: (vocational) high school or comprehensive school
  • Visit to the upper secondary school
  • Mathematical knowledge: Keen interest in mathematical and technical issues and in working with computers, and ideally very good grades in mathematics
  • Ideally, students should have some initial programming and/or software knowledge for a school internship. In any case, they should be willing to acquire these skills.

About the Application

The Mathematics Department at RPTU offers internships once a year in January/February. Please note the application deadline:

The application deadline is October 31 of the previous year.

Additional dates will only be offered if there is sufficient capacity and demand.

Applications must be submitted at least three months in advance.

Internships During the Holidays and After Graduation

During a vacation internship or internship between high school graduation and college, students can gain professional knowledge, skills, and experience in a mathematics department at Fraunhofer ITWM. The internship provides in-depth insight into the everyday work of mathematicians at a research institute.

Fraunhofer ITWM offers voluntary internships throughout the year.

Applications must be submitted at least three months in advance.

The Felix Klein Scholarship

Have you already decided to study mathematics at RPTU? How about financial support and personal guidance?

Our Felix Klein Scholarship

With our Felix Klein Scholarships, we support students who are enthusiastic about mathematics. Our scholarship holders receive €600 per month and personal support from our researchers. This means that they not only receive a first-class theoretical education, but also gain initial practical experience in everyday working life.
