About us

Innovative Mathematics in the Spirit of Felix Klein

Kaiserslautern lives mathematics – there is no other place where the modern self-image of mathematics is implemented and pursued as consistently as here: Award-winning research and teaching in pure and applied mathematics at the Department of Mathematics at the Rhineland-Palatinate University of Technology Kaiserslautern-Landau RPTU are complemented by the application orientation of the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM and its expertise for efficient transfer to industry.

The Felix Klein Center for Mathematics brings these two institutions together and links teaching and research. It was founded in December 2008 as part of the »Mathematics Initiative« of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The Mathematics Center is primarily committed to further education and training as well as the promotion of young talent.

Outstanding researchers are often namesakes and their CVs serve as a guide for scientific associations – as in the case of Felix Klein, for example:

Felix Klein (1849-1925) was an important mathematician, innovative teacher and, as the creator of Göttingen Mathematics, an outstanding scientific organizer.
He unites in his person everything that makes up the program of our Felix Klein Center and thus sets the direction and philosophy of our activities. In his words:

  • »Pure and applied mathematics should not be antipodes, but rather mutually enriching and complementary.«
  •  »The interaction of theory and practice requires first-class trained researchers.«
  •  »Mathematics is international and should not stop at borders.«

The Felix Klein Board – The People Behind It

The Felix Klein Board is the central body of the Felix Klein Center and consists of six members with equal representation from the Department of Mathematics at RPTU Kaiserslautern and Fraunhofer ITWM. The head is Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinz Küfer, other members are Dr. Stefanie Grimm, Prof. Dr. Axel Klar, Dr. habil. Christoph Lossen, Prof. Dr. Klaus Ritter. The Board decides on the admission of scholarship holders. It also organizes subject-specific and public events.
