Who Is Advancing to the Final?

The Mathematics Olympiad is a four-stage, nationwide competition aimed at highly gifted students. Three rounds precede the federal final: after the school and regional rounds, the state round took place from March 16 to 20, 2026, with 37 participants from grades 8 to 13 in Rhineland-Palatinate. Those who advanced to the final were honored at a ceremony at the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM in Kaiserslautern.

Intensive Preparation in the Math Camp

A one-week camp prepared mathematically gifted students for the state round. For the 13th time, such an event took place in Kaiserslautern, offering a total of 33 workshops on various mathematical topics relevant and essential for solving Olympiad problems. The team of instructors included professors, students, and doctoral candidates from RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau, as well as teachers and former Rhineland-Palatinate Olympians.

New Perspectives on Mathematics

»I learned so many new things that I had never heard of before. And the people here were really nice and explained everything very well«, says participant Amelie Saysombath from Zweibrücken. What she takes away most? »Perseverance with problems, because you don’t always immediately see an approach or the solution.«

A selection exam, together with the previous results, determined the nomination of the eleven-member federal team as well as four reserves.

Final Ticket and Personal Success Stories

The students learned about their participation at a ceremony at the Fraunhofer ITWM. One of the finalists is Jonas Dürkes, who attends the eighth grade at Gymnasium Mainz-Oberstadt. »I actually find math a bit boring at school,« he admits. »From the camp, I gained new knowledge, for example in geometry. Since I participated last year, I now have a better eye for the problems and was able to improve a lot, especially in the speed tasks.«

Another finalist is Elina Redenbach, a ninth-grade student at Kaiserslautern’s Hohenstaufen-Gymnasium. For her, the math camp was not just a learning experience – her father, Thomas Redenbach, works at the Fraunhofer ITWM, and her mother, Prof. Dr. Claudia Redenbach, is the head of the Statistics Working Group in the Department of Mathematics at the Rhineland-Palatinate Technical University Kaiserslautern-Landau.

Outlook for the Federal Final in Hamburg

This year, the 65th federal round of the Mathematics Olympiad will take place from June 7 to 10, 2026, in Hamburg. A team training session in Trier at the end of May will specifically prepare the Rhineland-Palatinate participants for the federal round.
